ASTON VILLA REPORTS £119.6M LOSS

Finance Football News

Aston Villa FC has revealed a pre-tax loss of £119.6m for the 2022/23 Premier League season.

This figure exceeds the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) limit of £105m for a three-year period, as part of a Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions.

However, the club says it has acted within the league’s PSR rules, as investments in its academy, infrastructure, charity foundation and women’s football development can be deducted from these losses.

Recently, Premier League outfit Everton have faced a 10-point deduction (later reduced to six) for failure to comply with the league’s PSR rules, after reporting a loss of £125m between 2019 and 2022.

Although Villa recorded losses for 2022/23, the club saw an uptick in overall revenue from £178.4m £217.7m, following the men’s team’s 7th-place finish last season, its highest since the 2009/10 campaign.

On the pitch, Villa has spent £63.7m on new transfer acquisitions over the last year, while generating a £22m profit from player sales. The arrival of new players has contributed to the larger employee wage bill, which has surged from £137m to £194.2m.

Villa invested £13.4m into its club infrastructure over the last year, almost double the £7.1m investment from the 2021/22 season.

In August 2023, the Villains opened a new Brookvale academy in central Birmingham, which offers ‘enhanced facilities for both the men’s and women’ academy teams.’

A club statement said, ‘It is important to note that these figures are in line with the strategic business plan, and we continue to operate within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

‘The owners of Aston Villa remain committed to the long-term and sustainable development of the club, and we look forward to continued progress on the delivery of our strategic plan.’
