FOREST EYES ICONIC QATAR WORLD CUP STADIUM

Nottingham Forest has drawn up provisional plans to expand the capacity of its home stadium, the City Ground.

The plans would see the Premier League football club’s stadium capacity exceed 30,000 by erecting a temporary seating area that will be built on shipping containers and modelled on the Stadium 974 used in Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Now in its second season in English football’s division, Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis is thought to be seeking ways to utilise increasing demand for tickets, with the club reportedly believing it could have sold up to 50,000 tickets to its high-profile Premier League games last season.

The Athletic has reported that an idea under consideration is to fill in the corners at the Trent End with a new structure based on one of Qatar’s World stadiums that was built on 974 recycled shipping containers.

There has been no official confirmation from the club, but with no planning permission required for this potential expansion, it is thought that development could start before Christmas.

The plans would involve making another 500 or so seats available to fans which would take the stadium capacity to just over 30,000. However, in the long-term Marinakis hopes that the City Ground can reach up to 35,000.
