The Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has been selected by the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and darts brand, Winmau, as the venue for the 43rd Winmau World Masters from 2016.
As part of an initial five year deal, the Winmau World Masters darts tournament will be staged during 2016 over the weekend of 24th – 27th November.
The Copper Box Arena is also set to host George Groves’ fight against Andrea Di Luisa on 30th January and recently held the BT World Wheelchair Rugby Challenge 2015.
Peter Bundey, deputy managing director of GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates the Copper Box Arena, said: “We are really excited that the Copper Box Arena has been chosen to host the new end-of-year highlight for the British Dart Organisation’s Masters.
“Since opening its doors to the public in 2013, the Copper Box Arena has quickly become one of London’s most versatile and exciting events venues. We’re seeing more and more interest from major sports tournaments as well as enquiries for a range of conferences, awards and exhibitions. It’s great to see the former Olympic venue being so well used.”
Sue Williams, chairman of the BDO, added: “This is a new era for darts in Britain and I would like to thank all the people who have worked so hard over the last few months to make this happen. These are exciting times for the BDO and darts internationally. We look forward to the BDO growing from County to Professional level, backed by the biggest brands such as Winmau.”
