Unibet has announced it will be the title sponsors of September’s inaugural PDC Champions League darts event, which will be live on BBC from the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.
The eight-player tournament will be the fist time the PDC will have its first tournament broadcast live by BBC Sport, following a new deal which was announced in February 2016.
The Unibet Champions League will take place on 24th -25th September, with the world’s top eight players following July’s World Matchplay qualifying to compete in Cardiff, where they will be drawn into two groups of four.
The players will play one group match per session on Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, before the top two players from each group proceed to compete in Sunday evening’s decisive semi-finals and final.
Unibet’s sponsorship of the Champions League sees them follow up the existing sponsorships of the European Championship and Masters, and adds to the new backing of the Unibet World Grand Prix, which will take place in October.
“The Unibet Champions League of Darts is going to be a real showpiece event this year for the PDC, and the extensive BBC coverage will allow Unibet to reach a large audience of passionate sports fans with our brand” said Unibet UK marketing manager Chris Watson. “We are delighted to be involved as headline sponsor for such a spectacular event, to continue our strong growth in the UK and to further our support for the PDC”.
“It’s fantastic that Unibet were so keen to extend their partnership with the PDC to include the Unibet Champions League,” said PDC chairman Barry Hearn.
“This unique tournament will be another great showcase for the ever-growing Unibet brand, and we look forward to working with them for this eagerly-awaited championship, which will receive huge national and international exposure through the BBC.”
